Es Penyal neighborhood in the upper part of Banyalbufar

Isla has completed the renovation of an old Mallorcan
townhouse in Banyalbufar – a coastal village nestled within the
mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana – that involved restoring
the main structure, roof and facade, as well as rearranging the
interiors. The main strategy consisted on removing
all non-original elements added over the years in order to enhance
the character of the house, from floors to furniture.
Once cleaned, new contemporary elements
were introduced.

Traditional symbols and drawings included geometrical patterns, nature and animals or portratis of people from the family.

Following the
Mallorcan medieval tradition of painting the underside of the roof
tile canopy – “teules pintades” – artist Luis Urculo was
invited to reinterpret this popular pictorial expression. The
rust-color symbols are meant to bring good luck and keep away bad
spirits from the inhabitants of the house.

This
project had a peculiar starting point: It began at the same time as
its construction. Once
the license was granted, the client decided to change architect* and
called us to rethink the project and provide a contemporary character
that was lacking.
The
project had to work with a pre-imposed footprint of four
interconnected volumes. The main house would evoke a Mallorcan
vernacular house, while the adjacent volumes would be more abstract. The
idea was to embrace and include the Mediterranean landscape of the
site, in particular the delicate local garrigue, and to emphasize the
backdrop offered by the Tramuntana mountain range, defining a skyline
as a stage on which to develop the house.

	&#60;img width="3082" height="4109" width_o="3082" height_o="4109" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/64490fc4b00c0ee43e5fe4d1ef47dac70abe27ef952523a2011cecd237fac77a/Algaida_by_Isla_Architects_photo_luis_diaz_diaz_33.jpg" data-mid="129115689" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/64490fc4b00c0ee43e5fe4d1ef47dac70abe27ef952523a2011cecd237fac77a/Algaida_by_Isla_Architects_photo_luis_diaz_diaz_33.jpg" /&#62;

The
rocks and stones from the excavation would be recovered and
recomposed giving shape to the main house façade, in fact and by
using not only the stones but also the excavation earth itself will
integrate and blend the volume with the terrain. The obtained tone
would also give color the locally prefabricated concrete elements,
such as the window frames, cornices, and exterior floors and
platforms, as well as the natural mortar of the auxiliary volumes.

Inside,
the house can be experienced as a large open space, but it can also
be divided into two clearly differentiated parts (one more public and
the other more private) the physical separation can be obtained by
the simple sliding of a large door panel.

Main space facing the kitchen
The
main open space consists of a series of programmatic functions under
a common wooden coffered ceiling: a large open kitchen, the dining
room, and a living room facing the fireplace, and can be lived as
both a family and social space, once receiving guests.

On the lateral side of the kitchen, a fitted wall contains the access to
the pantry and laundry room, as well as the cupboards, the
refrigerator, freezer, and a minibar. A stainless-steel island
separates the kitchen from the dining room, which features a large
solid oak table that seats 12 diners. At the east end, the living
room is topped by a fireplace formed by a large piece of bent black
steel. French windows open to both orientations, allowing
permeability from the garden, cross ventilation, and views of the
Tramuntana mountain and swimming pool area.

At
the entrance, integrated in the volume of the staircase, hidden flush
doors will give access to the guest water closet and
to a cloak cabinet. Between the main house and the bedrooms, a
communication space serves as an interface between the different
areas. Three large windows separate the different volumes and
visually frame the natural views and communicate with the outdoor
space. The largest of these openings gains in depth to serve both as
a bench and as place to stay, to enjoy the sun and the landscape, and
as auxiliary storage.

The
volume of the children's bedrooms has been designed so that it can
evolve over time as they acquire more independence. The master
bedroom, on the other hand, has a walk-in closet, and gives access to
the bathroom through a fully mirrored front defining a small boudoir.

project has placed special emphasis on the development of
contemporary details inspired by traditional Majorcan architecture,
from the wooden coffered ceilings of the main living-dining room, the
terrazzo floor that emulates and updates the traditional trispol,
the flared windows, which have been softened to sift the entry of
light, or the solutions of windows and their frames, achieving a
well-balanced formalization, rooted to its specific context but also
open to broader solutions.

On
the exterior, the pool complex is understood as a series of floating

expressive shadow line allowing the underneath growth and integration
of the local vegetation, making the transition between the natural

The
pool floats on the slight slope of the garrigue by means of large
sandy precast concrete slates, and has as an associated underground
program changing and technical rooms- which are accessed through a
staircase that also emerges as a ring of the same prefabricated
material. To top it all off, a shower basin floats between the
existing trees. These pieces function in sequence, inviting the
inhabitant to follow a path during the act of bathing.

		<description>Tiny House
40 m2 house for four peopleLocation: Banyalbufar, MallorcaYear: 2021Architects:

isla (Marta Colón de Carvajal, Juan Palencia)

Team: Cristina Gutiérrez, Francisca MirandaPhotos: Luis Díaz Díaz
Status: Phase 1 Completed

Can a family of four live in a 40m2 house? This question was rejected by a couple of offices before the clients arrived to our studio. The tricky question was solved with just one new piece of furniture or device that managed to organise the space, provide all the functional elements and separate the different rooms. A second phase will start soon.

Postcard of the Hotel Fénix (1969) from Carmen to her mother
“...Mom, this is the hotel pool... there is also a lake with swans... in the evening there are dances and attractions every day. Our room overlooks the sea, as I said, a dream. I would love for you to be here with us.”

The
Fénix building (Gutierrez Soto, 1957-59) was erected as part of an
operation that included the refurbishment and extension of the
“Victoria Hotel” and the construction of a new apartment hotel
with which they would share the green areas and swimming pool. The
new block was laid out in an L-shape opening onto the garden, with
the bay of Palma as a backdrop, leaving the service areas open to the
side street, with a more compact façade.

In
1979 the Hotel Fénix was transformed into private dwellings, and the
apartment, which had not been renovated since that year, required a
total renovation.

The
existing partition walls were demolished, the insulation of the
entire envelope was redone, the party wall with the neighbor was
soundproofed, the windows were reconditioned (replacing the old
single glazing with sheets with high acoustic and thermal properties)
while respecting the original appearance of the facade (the only
protected element of the building), and all the obsolete and
inefficient installations were replaced. This entire gutting
operation gave us the opportunity to rethink -together with the
client- the complete redistribution of the house to adjust it to the
needs of the new inhabitants.

The
prerequisites on the part of the client were, mainly:

1.
To
include 90 linear meters of shelving to relocate their library.

2.
To provide a predominant space for family portraits.

3.
To integrate a few pieces of furniture with special sentimental
value.

4.
Achieve open spaces

5.
Maximize storage space

‘Dad,
buy the next car so that we can all fit in the front’

This
old family anecdote from the client, when the 6 siblings were
fighting to ride in the front seat of the family car, led to the idea
of compacting the functional program in the heart of the apartment,
freeing up the entire front of the house. The day areas such as the
living room, dining room, reading and work space are thus open to the
bay of Palma.

Following
the logic of a sailboat, and with an apartment depth of 12 meters, we
manage to fit three bedrooms, the kitchen, and two bathrooms, as if
we were anchoring a Swan 40 S&#38;amp;S inside the house, adapting its
distribution by integrating solutions and mechanisms typical of a
sailboat, such as folding bunk beds, extendable beds, and different
types of storage spaces (clothes, sheets and towels, dishes,
appliances, etc ...). On the perimeter, the 'hull frames' would be
used to house the 3000-volume library.

The&#38;nbsp;open
space,
which occupies the entire front of the apartment, is subtly
subdivided by the placement of storage columns into three distinct
programmatic spaces.

 In the central
space is the dining room, with a set of Thonet chairs and an old
circular family table. And at the east end is the study and reading
area, with a table that floats attached to the window, and allows
writing overlooking the sea. An armchair with ottoman linked to the
library completes the study area as a place to read and review texts.

The
project is characterized by the presence of this large central piece
of furniture, made entirely of phenolic wood board finished in
natural oak or painted white - depending on the area -, to which only
a few selected pieces of furniture are added. An armchair with
ottoman 'Womb' by Saarinen in bright red as a reading point
accompanied by a small table 'Tulip' in black marble, an Aluminium
chair by the Eames for the study - upholstered in mint
&#38;amp;
ivory,
to match the terrace - or the low table 'Lamé' by Pedro Feduchi, in
front of the sofa, customized for the apartment.

The
lighting is also resolved in a discreet way, by means of lighting
integrated in the curved molding of the living room and
in the ceilings, or by the occasional introduction of lamps that
accompany the character of each space, such as the 'Cestita' and the
'TMM' floor lamp in oak in the living, or the same 'TMM Corto' wall
lamps in the bedroom (all designed by Miquel Milá), the 'Tolomeo'
floor lamps by Artemide in the reading area, and the 'Nemo' lamp by
Le Corbusier above the sofa.

Master bedroom (LDD)

The&#38;nbsp;central
strip accommodates
the entire program of the house. The master bedroom is located in the
second line, as an alcove, open to the open space with a large
opening integrated in the bookcase. This frees the space for study
and reading during the day, while enjoying the views over the bay of
Palma and its harbor bustle. A blind allows, if necessary to provide
occasional privacy, to be closed to the living room. The bathroom is
located opposite the bedroom, connected by simple double pivot doors
that are hidden in the carpentry when open. The kitchen is located
parallel to the living room and with direct access from the dining
room, overlooking the west side garden. It is organized in two
parallel lines, a low worktop with shelf made of a single piece of
resin (with integrated hob and sink), and a high wall equipped with
storage for crockery and kitchen utensils, pantry, refrigerator,
integrated washer and dryer, and cleaning cupboard.

Finally,
the entrance
strip,
which at first glance looks like a generous hallway-bookcase with a
sequence of windows to the north and with a couple of actions
transforms into the apartment's secondary bedrooms. &#60;img width="1500" height="324" width_o="1500" height_o="324" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c1656d1030d2793b9fc977169c0e4bfba2a5d028001c9ce2deb2655ff07199b2/Bed-solutions.jpg" data-mid="129521056" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c1656d1030d2793b9fc977169c0e4bfba2a5d028001c9ce2deb2655ff07199b2/Bed-solutions.jpg" /&#62;
Bedroom solutions: (1) Sailing boat cabin (2) Alcove (3) Bretone bed

At the back, a
large sliding door hidden in the furniture allows to make this final
section independent, and turn it into a guest cabin. &#60;img width="4081" height="3061" width_o="4081" height_o="3061" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eb6695d5e7e175c774c80a00d12d5745860fd35c10120270396f59251a7294c8/Fenix_by_Isla_Architects_photo_luis_diaz_diaz_29.jpg" data-mid="129135211" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eb6695d5e7e175c774c80a00d12d5745860fd35c10120270396f59251a7294c8/Fenix_by_Isla_Architects_photo_luis_diaz_diaz_29.jpg" /&#62;
The reading cabin (LDD)

The reading
niche allows, by extending the drawers, to convert the divan into a
double bed, and at the west end a functional and compact bathroom is
fitted out, with the shower overturned on the window overlooking the
garden. At the entrance, the niche that acts as a bench-receiver
hides a system of folding bunk beds that allow to add two more beds
to the capacity of the house, especially designed for grandchildren
and sailing friends.

The&#38;nbsp;terrace,
12x2 meters, is
completely
open to the port of Palma and with views over the bay to Cabrera,
which retains the materiality and the original appearance of the
'50s: the turquoise marbled stoneware planters, the olive green
floor, the sloping soffit painted in a fiery turquoise, the woodwork
of the large windows in varnished pine, the local sandstone facade,
the green and white striped awnings, even the original Gutiérrez Soto
lamps - which fortunately were preserved - consisting of a simple
perforated steel sheet with natural motifs.

dining table, designed expressly for the terrace, extends the dining
area to the outside; and two armchairs facing the sea serve as an
outdoor reading spot.

Assuming a privileged position on top of the Tauras Hill, the new National Concert Hall presents itself as a striking urban element and therefore a new reference landmark for the city of Vilnius. Formally a continuance of the pitched roof vernacular characteristic of the Old Town, its scale signifies a public gesture.

It is a new point of gathering and a fundamental structure for the city.

&#60;img width="8697" height="3497" width_o="8697" height_o="3497" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/58b62214713d4e4e7e6affc70231ed895b012b96ffecd2e53d8b784b186ab48d/MA1082_AERIAL-B-.jpg" data-mid="129217547" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/58b62214713d4e4e7e6affc70231ed895b012b96ffecd2e53d8b784b186ab48d/MA1082_AERIAL-B-.jpg" /&#62;
The Concert hall inserted in the cityscape

Primarily the National Concert Hall culminates the North-South axis, connecting the building visually to Vilnius Municipality. A subterranean escalator will receive the public at Pamėnkalnio road connecting with Lukiskiu square, creating a ceremonial, uniquely experiential route in ascending to the National Concert Hall. This connection between the National Concert Hall and the new development of the city activates the recently reconstructed Lukiskiu square; conceived as an open and democratic green space in the city, that finds a natural extension with the new landscape intervention on Tauras Hill, creating a network of new public spaces.

Situation plan

Significantly the escalator brings the National Concert Hall closer to the East-West cultural axis through Gedimino Avenue, connecting with the other cultural buildings of the city such as the National Library, the Academy of Music and Theater, the Mazazis theater, the National Opera Theater and the National Theater, and thereby strengthening the connection and interaction between these institutions. The National Concert Hall is part of the series of notable buildings in the city that also follow the East-West axis, including the Parliament, the Lukiskiu square, the Government building and the Vilnius Cathedral.A mysterious volume hovers over Tauras Hill, an artificial continuance of the topography that was later cut, resulting in an intriguing floating tension.

Working model 1:1000

This new urban landmark can be understood as an encompassing roof that shelters the architectural program, whilst simultaneously establishing a formal relation with the roofscape of Vilnius.
The main geometry results from a parametric relation between the two performance halls, which provide the two “roof
summits”.

The National Concert Hall is formed around two found elements (perhaps emerging rock formations, perhaps two ancient elements) strong and steady. Inhabiting these volumes are the two halls, protected by an encompassing roof providing shelter and uniting the entire program. It is then, under this generous roof, that the National Concert Hall is organised, generating what can be called the ”House of Nation”.&#38;nbsp;
The House of Nation purports to be - in all senses - an open house; welcoming visitors and offering opportunity for different activities to take place. Understood as a democratised space for the city, it aims to stretch its functions beyond its conventional boundaries.

&#60;img width="5716" height="3203" width_o="5716" height_o="3203" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f102d0045673ac7c27625ac5b2c59d80f10145b1970ff992d9c7fbf1df814974/MA1082_EXTERIOR.jpg" data-mid="129217548" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f102d0045673ac7c27625ac5b2c59d80f10145b1970ff992d9c7fbf1df814974/MA1082_EXTERIOR.jpg" /&#62;

The ground floor lobby can be read as an extension of the surrounding topography, enhancing the fluidity between programmatic groups and aims to be used as a covered plaza. The strategic relative position of the two concert halls boxes creates an inner urban hierarchy, whereby public streets and plazas can be perceived.

Plan sequence, from underground to rooftop

The separation between interior and exterior through a fine glazing, allows the ground cover to extend inside, blurring the frontier between out and in. The different floor plans are clearly defined by the main and small hall. Fluid programmatic zones (and not confined traditional spaces) are placed along the extended foyer which is developed recorring to ramps, platforms and steps.

Main foyer

The foyer assumes an important role as the building interface and also as an activity generator.&#38;nbsp; The strategic relative position of the two concert halls boxes creates an inner urban hierarchy, whereby public streets and plazas can be perceived.

The wrapping envelope (or skin) of each main volume has a determinant role in the functional activation of the lobby: support spaces such as the info and ticketing, the cloakroom and first aid are integrated in this programmatic wall. Benches and booths configure niches and alcoves, inviting the public to sit, read a book or even to listen to a music composition.

The foyer ramifies to the upper floors, defining a continuous public space, for which the grand stair and the mezzanines are key.Configured as a “shoebox” type hall, it aims to be a venue of exceptional acoustic performance.&#38;nbsp; First in spatial hierarchy, its presence dominates the floorplans, cutting through the different floor slabs.&#60;img width="2062" height="598" width_o="2062" height_o="598" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7102ed5a10b8fda4825a5ec53b2c7e8ad30293c915e1043d6fa0cef40529fb91/MA1082_SHORT-SECTION.jpg" data-mid="129249451" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7102ed5a10b8fda4825a5ec53b2c7e8ad30293c915e1043d6fa0cef40529fb91/MA1082_SHORT-SECTION.jpg" /&#62;
Long section

The outer façade expresses a hard shell of rough precast concrete in contrast with the warmer interior of a timber lining with a playful rhythm intertwined with the piping of the organ. The “box” retains a clear spatial identity, distinctly differentiating the perimeter walls from the ceiling. The Farnese Theatre in Parma (Italy) could be invoked as a reference.
The black ceiling absorbs technical lighting and sound devices, perceived as an abstract constellation. An acoustic canopy floats over the stage, creating a visual feature that highlights the performance. Being adjustable in height, it also incorporates technical sound and lighting devices.

The grand hall

The small hall e is intended to be a versatile black box to accommodate multiple performance types.
A seating device along the rear wall is proposed to allow for a full auditorium-style set-up. Concurrently, vertically retractable seating emerging from the floor is provided, which has the potential to further configure the space.
In addition, by raising the wall to the rear of the stage, the space can be extended into the foyer, multiplying the options of use. Additionally, it is possible to associate the functionally of the small hall to educational groups, serving as workshop space, or using the open foyer stalls to use the space for lectures.

Detail copper shingles

The building operates as one continuous surface that covers the programs in an enveloping roof. The roof has a mercurial quality, appearing monolithic, homogenous from afar, yet upon approach, one is able to recognize the individual copper shingles.

As the surface covers the hall and axillary program, it seems to hover over the ground, affording a covered outdoor environment and transparent circulation throughout the space.
These are the results of one large cut to the overall surface at ground level. The ground floor is fully glaze with laminated spruce mullions, allowing for transparency, but crucially maintaining energy conservation.

Introduction

The project Maritime Museum of Mallorca - The Sea is my land is a global project of transformation of the industrial area of the port of Palma, located in the area of Contramuelle Mollet, and has been selected for the Mallorca Circular Next Generation plan.

This project seeks to open the city to the sea, pacify the traffic in the area and encourage pedestrian and bicycle circulation, rearrange the buildings by introducing the new Maritime Museum, give continuity to the promenade, preserve the memory of the place, arrange the public spaces open to the sea, and finally, renaturalize the San Telmo Gardens.

In this way, the surface area destined to the car is reduced by 60%, the flowerbeds and green areas increase by 116%, the pedestrian area increases by 100% and the bicycle lane by 42%.

San Telmo Gardens

The Museum will culminate the transformation of this area, improving a space of enormous potential for the city, turning it into a pole of culture, leisure and citizen use, attracting visitors at all times of the year, around the oratory of San Telmo, patron saint of sailors.

The new gardens will recreate a Mediterranean riverside landscape, the characteristic pockets of spontaneous vegetation that arise on the edge of the Mallorcan coast, defined by the wind, and the coastal paths, where native species of low or almost no maintenance predominate, changing texture and color throughout the year.

In addition, most of the existing trees in the area are preserved, especially the large and emblematic ones, such as pines and magnolias, and the trees are densified by introducing new pines (Halepensis and Pinea), hackberry trees (Celtis australis), and palm trees (Washingtonias robustas).

Relationship with the city

The Museum is discreetly located in the maritime elevation of the city of Palma, in front of the old town, in dialogue with the Cathedral, the Gothic Lonja and the city walls, and takes over the location of the actual Shipyards, understanding this as the origin of the Museum. The intervention seeks to enhance the identity character of the different activities and encourage dialogue between the parties. The activity of the Museum and the activity of the fishermen are independent but function as a complementary attraction for the city.

The proposal opens the fishing activity to the city, both for its tourist projection and for the benefit of the citizens and the fishermen themselves. The citizens will gain a new promenade next to the sea, where they will be able to see the work of the fishermen, up to the end of the East pier of the Museum, with the longest boats afloat.
The fishermen will gain in visibility and will see their work spaces rearranged, increasing their net drying area, and they will also see their buildings and spaces renovated, both the Fishermen's infrastructures and the Fish Market.

The buildings

The set of buildings, which includes the Fish Market, the Fishermen's insfrastructures and the Maritime Museum, is located on the current shipyards, with emphasis on the preservation of the industrial heritage: the stands, the courtyard, the warehouse and the original cranes are kept, as a testimony of an activity that goes back several centuries in the history of the island, and the arcades of the existing fishermen's building, which will characterize the plinth building where all the fishing programs will be located.

The Museum is projected as an open structure, where normally hidden processes are made visible, such as the conservation workshops, the mestres d'aixa workshop or the warehouses. It is also conceived as a space for culture and learning that includes classrooms and workshops, the maritime library, a maritime meeting point, and an auditorium for cycles and talks. It will be a living and dynamic Museum, where people come not only to visit exhibitions but also to learn, discover and even to elaborate the contents of the Museum.

And finally, it will be an inclusive and social space, an urban place where people of different ages meet to carry out all kinds of activities related to the maritime world.

The concept of the Museum arises from the reconversion of the Shipyards, not only because of its location, but also because it replicates the structure of its ships, which grew organically around the slipways that took the boats out of the water. In this way it recreates its organic order, creating a sequence of different ships, where each one adjusts to its program and size, making it flexible and adaptable for the future.

This sequence of fragmented naves generates an urban space and rhythm, reminiscent of the streets of the old part of the city, with their characteristic twists and turns and the overhang of their cornices, which protect the passerby in the hottest months.

In addition, the main nave, the most visible element of the complex, at sunset becomes a large lantern that announces the contents of the museum, like a large showcase overlooking the city.

Program distribution of the Museum

The Museum is arranged in three main programmatic packages, which are organized respecting the V-shape of the current Shipyards, which allows maintaining the existing courtyard and the existing stands, for its spatial value and its industrial cultural legacy.

In turn, this arrangement allows placing the other two packages (educational and public) along the new boulevard of Contramuelle Street, providing it with independent accesses so that its operation does not depend on the Museum's schedule.

The project has been conceived from a sustainable approach. Thus, the project has been designed and studied so that its consumption and environmental impact is minimal, so that natural lighting predominates, with passive shading controls such as eaves and louvers on the facade -which are graduated depending on their use and orientation-, in addition to having renewable energy for its operation.
In the same way, it is a museum accessible to all, without architectural, auditory, visual or sensory barriers, so that it can be enjoyed by all citizens, aiming to be a benchmark in this type of public infrastructure.

History
The Maritime Museum of Mallorca takes over from the old Maritime Museum of the Balearic Islands, closed in 1974. This relay is conceived in an innovative and updated way, as it has to be a museum of the XXI century, where citizens become the center of the cultural space, to whom the activities generated around a collection, in this case focused on the sea, are directed. But it does not forget the legacy of the old institution, which at the time was a benchmark in the protection of the island's maritime heritage.

The new museum deals with the sea in a transversal way from a millenary heritage, generated since the arrival of the first settlers to the island, who were sailors. This transversal vision of the museum makes us understand and reflect on the use that has been made of the sea and our coasts over time. A use that has provided cultural manifestations, knowledge, experiences, encounters and misunderstandings that have marked the politics and economy of the societies that have inhabited Mallorca. A whole set of events that have generated an extensive and rich heritage related to the sea, to which we now have to incorporate reflections on biodiversity and marine conservation, and the sea as the last frontier for many people, while it is a place of recreation for many others.

CollectionThe Maritime Museum of Mallorca collects different heritage manifestations that have been produced around it over time, such as amphorae, navigation instruments, ships, votive offerings, shipping documentation, professions, vocabulary and language, gastronomy and culture in general, which would not be understood without the sea.

The Museum recovers the old collection of the Maritime Museum of the Balearic Islands, to enrich it with new pieces and new stories, to bring it closer to the citizens of Mallorca and the visitor in an attractive and responsible way. At the same time, it implements lines of research related to intangible heritage and knowledge about a way of life that has been changing rapidly over the last hund
red years.

Main exhibition space

The permanent exhibition is located in the warehouse of the Shipyards, converted and recovered for its spatial value and its ideal conditions to house a maritime museum collection.

The tour begins by ascending from the courtyard, by the ceremonial staircase, or by elevator. The open and covered atrium offers access to the two exhibition rooms, or exit to the linear viewpoint.

It also has a covered outdoor exhibition space on the overhang overlooking the bay, and the exit to the covered slipway, where you can visit a dry ship from the deck level of the ship.

Temporary exhibition space

This hall is located at the beginning of the tour, after the entrance hall. The main space has a double-height space with a perimeter gallery, which allows hanging or suspending large objects or vessels so that they can be observed from above, laterally and from below. Various ways to occupy or exhibit on this floor are presented below.

The space is naturally lit by four skylights that emphasize the double-height space and the suspended objects.

Large openings in the courtyard-side façade will help connect the objects and vessels on display inside and outside the vessel.

Exterior exhibition

The exterior spaces of the Museum extend to the Museum's courtyard, the side docks, and the floating pontoon for possible classic vessels passing through the island.

The courtyard is understood as a natural extension of the public space (the San Telmo Gardens), allowing citizens to reach further into the interior of the port. This space is understood as an exhibition framework, as a connector of programs (both physically and visually), as a catalyst of activity and as a decompression device.

The Museum has an associated water mirror to display the Museum's floating exhibit. The collection includes its own boats, especially traditional boats from the Balearic Islands, many of them small fishing and recreational boats, such as llaüts, gussis or pasteras. There are also three larger trawlers, such as the Balear, which currently sails and is owned by the Consell, the Nuevo Tomás, which is in the process of being restored, and the Valldemossa, which will be restored in the next few years.
Likewise, the current docks and the water mirror of the Shipyards allow receiving boats on loan from other museums, and classic transit boats of up to 120 meters in length, which would accommodate, for example, a training ship such as the Juan Sebastián Elcano.

A floating pontoon is also proposed to accommodate other vessels, such as the Classic Regatta boats, which would temporarily expand the Museum's floating exhibition.

Other spaces

Beyond the exhibition itself, the Maritime Museum of Mallorca offers other complementary programs that are part of the idea of the Museum that is to be built.

On the one hand, the aim is to make visible the processes that are usually hidden, such as the process of repairing boats by the mestres d'aixa, the repair workshops of museum objects, or the Museum's warehouses, as a way of accessing the objects in a different context to that of the exhibition discourse. On the other hand, it seeks to enhance and bring to the forefront the educational facet of the Museum, through large workshop spaces, a library for children and another for adults, an auditorium for talks, cycles and screenings, a maritime meeting room, so that sea enthusiasts have a place to meet and discuss, and a space dedicated to documentation and graphic and audiovisual generation, and research about the sea, its heritage and its biodiversity.

And finally, the most public part, the cafeteria-restaurant, located on the lookout terrace, as a place of rest and decompression, open to all.
&#60;img width="4488" height="2647" width_o="4488" height_o="2647" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3041948b4fbd3e0291a15f2c9a621b614751b0733d7f48d7ddde2e4538f33647/tienda-v07.jpg" data-mid="131989812" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3041948b4fbd3e0291a15f2c9a621b614751b0733d7f48d7ddde2e4538f33647/tienda-v07.jpg" /&#62;
Info, tickets, and shop of the Museum (Playtime)Access to the Museum is through the first building, which contains, on the first floor, the reception and information area, ticket sales, and the store, as well as the visitor restrooms and checkroom.

The store is a double-height space, which due to the transparency of its facade, serves as a lure for passers-by who stroll through the area. In addition, its strategic position makes it easy to go in and out of the museum and buy a souvenir or book from the exhibitions. It will also function as a meeting point both at the entrance and exit of the Museum. From this space there will be direct access to the Museum's courtyard. A typhlological model will be placed at this point to orient visually impaired visitors.

On the second floor are the administration offices of the Museum, a large space with zenithal and lateral light with work and meeting areas, and with direct access from the street Contramuelle Mollet.

The auditorium is located between the upper level of the educational program and the viewing plaza of the public program. With a capacity for 182 people, it is the ideal space for projection cycles, conferences, training courses, small concerts or meetings such as the Sea Studies Conference. Its position, accessible both from inside the museum and from Contramuelle Mollet street, as well as its proximity to the cafeteria-restaurant and the educational program, makes it an ideal auditorium for organizing these types of events without interrupting the normal operation of the Museum, whether organized internally in the Museum or rented by an external agent.
The Museum incorporates a workshop of Mestres d'aixa, who will restore the boats in the collection in situ. These restoration processes will be visible -by opening windows both to the street and to the interior of the courtyard- and accessible to visitors -by means of a half-height mezzanine that allows groups of visitors to observe the work closely without the risk of disturbing the workers and in compliance with safety regulations-.

In the same way, the museum object repair workshop will be visually open to visitors through a large window, making visible from the museum's courtyard the work that is usually hidden in a traditional museum.

On the second floor of building 5 is the Maritime Library, a 300m2 space that will have a large perimeter bookstore, study areas, more informal reading areas, a special book storage area, and an information and control point.

The educational space is one of the most important programs of the Museum, and has a large multifunctional space for workshops, which can be subdivided into smaller spaces for groups. It is illuminated from above by skylights and laterally by the façade. It also has a nucleus of bathrooms, a small dining room for school groups and the maritime meeting and exchange point, a room where sea and boat enthusiasts can meet to investigate and discuss.

The multipurpouse educational space
Outside of the Museum itself, the building used for the fish market and the Fishermen's Guild of Palma will be part of the complex, and synergies can be established to complement both uses. Making the city's fishing activity visible, tasting and learning about traditional dishes and recipes, learning how local fishermen work or understanding how the fish market works: all of this will serve to complete the Museum's cross-cutting narrative.

On the other hand, as part of the proposal, the fishing pier will be opened to the public, both for its tourist projection, as well as for the benefit of citizens and fishermen.

The Cofradía de Pescadores de Palma will have a fishermen's canteen at the southern end of the building, managed by the fishermen themselves, where fresh fish will be offered. It will be a place where visitors can taste and learn about the gastronomic culture of the island, with the context of the bay of Palma and the proximity of the floating exhibition of the Museum.

The project tames the slope of the valley through a series of terraces, in which the house and pool are inserted, the bedrooms, that fan out into the terrain, and the living room and kitchen resting on top, like two apero houses oriented to the landscape. The house, traditionally finished in stone, lime and terra cotta, hides a prefabricated light timber frame structure and a system that allows passive climatisation and ventilation of the spaces.
